Common Questions
What's the difference between paternity and divorce?
Paternity cases are for unmarried parents. Divorce cases are for married couples. Paternity establishes legal parentage, custody, and support without addressing property division or alimony.
Do I need a DNA test?
If the father is on the birth certificate or acknowledges paternity, no test is needed. If paternity is disputed, the court can order DNA testing.
Can I get child support through a paternity case?
Yes. Paternity cases establish child support using the same Florida guidelines as divorce cases. Support can be ordered retroactively to the date of filing.
