How To Start Moving On After a Florida Divorce

Posted by Antonio G. Jimenez, Esq. | Feb 16, 2022 | 0 Comments

Valentine's Day always feels a little bit different after going through a divorce. By the time the entire divorce process is finished and the final papers are signed, most people are more than ready to be done with the entire thing. However, when you're on your own with a wide open future in front of you: how do you start moving on?

The time it takes to move on from something as major as a divorce is entirely up to you. No one else can make you do something if you aren't ready. The steps to take, however, tend to be the same for most everyone. Here are our 4 steps to start moving on after a divorce:

Forgive Yourself

The first step towards moving forward is accepting the past. However you feel about it, the past is the past and it cannot be changed. No one's actions can be changed. On your own time, accept this and forgive yourself. It will set you free. No one can change the past, but only by controlling the present can you change the future.

Occupy Your Time

Most people are unsure about what to do with the time that was spent on their partner after a divorce. Fill it with endless coffee? Binge twelve seasons in one weekend? Start dating a twenty year old? Here's a much better option: find a hobby you love. In the wake of a major life change, finding a new project you enjoy can help you open a new chapter of your life. We love painting, tennis, and trying new ice cream shops!

Spend Quality Time

Plenty of advice columns will tell you that “you need to spend time with others” or “you need to spend time by yourself.” Here's the secret: you need to do both. Spending quality time with your loved ones and new friends will help keep you happy, sane, and socially satisfied. Spending quality time with yourself will help you relax and learn to love yourself. Make time for both.

Test the Waters

Are you itching to get back out there and start dating again? Do you secretly want to, but aren't sure if you're ready? After your divorce is finalized (don't start dating during the divorce,) you are totally on your timeline. Try putting your feet in the water to see if you like it. If you realize you're not ready yet, you can always try again later.
